Windsurfing: Bradfield Wind Direction: E Wind Stength: F3/4 Surf / Sea State: flat Air Temperature: warm Sea Temperature: warm Weather: Sunny Max Speed: 15.8 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 17 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
Nice foil session at Bradfield. Prob my best foil session so far in terms
of improvements, although still keep breeching carelessly, but I have
finally sussed foiling.
Plan was to close reach all day in front and back straps like the good
guys, and also tidy up flight height control. It was pretty much the
perfect day for foiling with Mediterranean weather, flat water and a nice
F3 all day.
Rigged 8.5 with the mother of all front wings, the very wide Slingshot slab
84cm width. Prob too big, but have to find out its limit. Am using an
Exocet RF 91 board which is nice but think I prefer the parallel side board
for ease control and less swing when flying downwind.
Went straight off into flight towards Wrabness at least a mile away,
that’s the great thing about foiling, its like jumping on a long board
and exploring.
First attempt in the rear straps forced a breech of the big foil and I went
straight out of the front door. Then realised by angle was not tight enough
to windward. Next attempt spot on. Once flying stuff it upwind, and
that’s it feet in both straps, cranking power on, flying very low just
skipping the foot high waves - had full control of the board and foil for
the first time ever! Then just bearing off slightly to gain height if
necessary.
Now all I do is go upwind ffs as its more like windsurfing fin sailing.
Played around Wrabness and up towards Manningtree for a couple of hours non
stop. Had the mast track too forward so the downwind leg was in a crouched
position like long board sailing with the track jammed forward.
No matter what I did with the balance of the foil in relation to the board,
I cant seem to fly without constantly making adjust for up or down. Its
easy enough to move hand or press on front foot or rear foot but I do see
some guys just locked at a height tearing up the place.
Newbies Ian and Al were foiling first time out without exiting the front
door, which was amazing. Ian on a Bolt 115 and Al with the dos bollocks -
Slingshot wizard 125 with the 76 foil. Def look nice free ride setup.
Getting a good foil setup, plus positioning everything to suit our weight
makes a huge difference. Control on boom height for a decent stance along
with harness line length all need fine tuning.
Had a great session - learnt a lot to put in practice tomorrow again
Bradfield, but can say am a foiler.
Stayed out a long while but foiling is less stressful than fin surfing.
Went out of the front door 6 or more times, so have to improve.
Max speed was low but GPS had flat battery, and distance stopped 17
miles
